Instagram and Facebook Organic Reach in 2026: What Changed
By Jantien Vanderbeke. Updated 27 October 2026
The biggest organic changes on Meta in 2025 and 2026: Instagram ranks content on watch time, likes and sends, rewards original content and stops recommending accounts that mostly repost, and caps hashtags at 5. Facebook moved back towards friends' content, cut reach for unoriginal content and started testing a limit on link posts. For marketers, that means fewer posts, more original ones, and content people want to send to a friend.
Below: what changed, when, the source, and what I would do with it for a client or a brand.
What changed on Instagram
| Change | When | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram's top 3 ranking signals are watch time, likes and sends. Adam Mosseri advises tracking average watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach (Social Media Today) | January 2025 | Report on these three, per post |
| Reels can be up to 3 minutes, and the profile grid switched to 3:4 (Social Media Today) | January 2025 | Design feed visuals in 3:4 so nothing gets cropped on the grid |
| Trial Reels: show a Reel to non-followers first, and share it to followers if it performs in the first 72 hours (Meta) | December 2024 | Test new formats without risking your followers' feed |
| Edits, Instagram's own video editing app, launched (MacRumors) | April 2025 | One more free editing option next to CapCut |
| Public posts from business and creator accounts can show up in Google search, for users 18+, unless you switch it off (PPC Land) | July 2025 | Write captions with the words people search for |
| Creators can link Reels into a series (TechCrunch) | August 2025 | Turn a topic into a series people binge |
| Hashtags capped at 5 per post or Reel, rolling out gradually (Social Media Today) | December 2025 | Pick 3 to 5 relevant hashtags and put the effort into your caption |
| Accounts that mostly repost others' content are no longer recommended to non-followers. This now covers photos and carousels too, judged over roughly a month of posts (PetaPixel) | April 2026 | Make your own content. Reposts still reach your followers. New followers come from original content |
What changed on Facebook
| Change | When | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| The Friends tab came back with only friends' content, part of Meta's "OG Facebook" push, starting in the US and Canada (Meta) | March 2025 | Pages compete harder for attention in the feed |
| Meta cracked down on unoriginal content: accounts that repeatedly repost others' content lose monetisation and get less distribution (Meta for Creators) | July 2025 | Same lesson as Instagram: original content wins |
| Facebook is testing a limit of 2 link posts per month for professional profiles and Pages without Meta Verified (TechCrunch) | December 2025 (test) | Don't build your Facebook plan on link posts |
And Threads?
Threads passed 500 million monthly users in June 2026 (Meta). If your audience is on Instagram, Threads is an easy extra channel for short opinions and conversation.
What organic reach looks like in numbers
Meta doesn't publish organic reach benchmarks. The best recent benchmark I found is from Socialinsider (2026, based on about 25 million posts from 130,000+ Facebook pages):
| Facebook post type | Average engagement rate (by followers) |
|---|---|
| All posts | 0.15% |
| Albums and carousels | 0.18% |
| Reels | 0.18% |
| Link posts | 0.05% |
Albums also get the most views on average, links the fewest. So if a client asks why their link posts don't perform: this is why.
Can you still post a carousel on Facebook?
Meta hasn't announced that organic carousels on Facebook were removed. Marketers do report that the carousel option in Meta Business Suite is missing or works inconsistently for some accounts. If you don't see it, try posting from the Facebook app or as a photo album. Albums perform well, as the numbers above show.
What I would do with this as a marketer in 2026
- Make original content. Reposts and aggregated content get less reach on both platforms.
- Measure sends, watch time and likes per reach. Those are the signals Instagram itself names.
- Use Trial Reels to test new formats with non-followers first.
- Write captions for search. Use the words your audience searches for, and keep hashtags to 3 to 5.
- Put links where they work. Use Stories, your bio or comments, and plan Facebook content that works without a link.
FAQ about Meta organic reach
Is organic reach on Facebook dead?
No. Average engagement is low (0.15% by followers in Socialinsider's 2026 benchmark). Albums, carousels and Reels perform best, link posts worst.
What are the most important Instagram ranking signals in 2026?
Watch time, likes and sends, according to Adam Mosseri. Track average watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach.
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?
Since December 2025, Instagram has been gradually capping hashtags at 5 per post or Reel.
Did Meta remove organic carousel posts on Facebook?
There's no announcement from Meta. Some marketers report that the option is missing in Meta Business Suite for some accounts. Posting from the Facebook app or as an album works as an alternative.
Want help turning this into a content plan?
These changes ask for fewer, more original posts that fit each stage of the customer journey. In the Upskill workshop Content you build that plan with AI, on your own cases. Half a day, max 4 people.
