How to Become a Digital Nomad in 2026: Why Freedom Requires a Strategy, Not Just a Passport

There I was, sitting on a sun-drenched terrace in Portugal, staring at the final pages of my book.
It wasn’t a marketing manual; it was my personal story: a raw account of my journey through burnout. As I began writing the thank you section, a wave of clarity hit me harder than the Atlantic breeze.
I was thanking the people who helped me find my way back to myself. But in that moment, I realized something: The environment that was healing me was also the environment fueling my work. I didn't need a gray office in Belgium to be an expert. I didn't need to be physically present to provide high-level marketing strategy. I just needed a system that worked as hard as I did. That was the day my future entrepreneur truly went nomad.
If you’ve ever felt trapped by your four walls (whether you’re an employee or a business owner) this is for you.
What is a Digital Nomad in 2026? (The "Nomadpreneur" Reality)
To understand how to become a digital nomad today, you should look past the 2010s "backpacker" cliché.
In 2026, the most successful nomads are Nomadpreneurs. We aren't just "working remotely." Instead, we are building digital ecosystems like courses, coaching, and automated marketing funnels that separate our income from our physical location.
Definition: A digital nomad is a professional who leverages digital tools to perform their job or run their business from anywhere in the world, prioritizing lifestyle design and location independence.
The "Ugly Truth": The Myth of Local Integration
Before you start packing your bags, you should really think about your location.
The biggest misconception about the nomad life is that you’ll move to a new country and immediately become best friends with the locals.
It doesn't happen. Locals have lives. They have childhood friends, family obligations, and deep roots. They aren't always looking for a "three-month friend." If you go to a remote village hoping for instant community, you might find yourself lonelier than you were back home.
The strategy: This is why "Nomad Hubs" like Bali, Lisbon, or Madeira have exploded. We go there because of the social infrastructure. You surround yourself with people who speak the "language of freedom," people who understand why you’re on a laptop at 10 PM or why you’re celebrating a successful launch over sunset drinks.
The "Poolside Professional" (When Systems Save the Day)
I head to sunnier climates every winter because it keeps my creativity alive. But it’s not always easy.
Once, five minutes before a high-stakes meeting with a long-term client, my home Wi-Fi cut out completely. I sprinted to the nearest co-working space. I made the call, but there was a catch: the co-working space was attached to a pool.
As I sat there delivering deep-dive marketing strategy, half the people behind me were in bathing suits. It wasn't the Belgian "corporate" setting that my clients are used to. It was funny though... :)
The lesson: My client didn't care. Why? Because when you have a strong expertise and your systems and results are rock solid, the location of your office becomes secondary to the value you provide.
How to Become a Digital Nomad: Your 3-Step Roadmap
If you are an employee or a business owner without a digital product, the transition feels impossible. Here is how you bridge the gap:
1. Know your Expertise
What do you know that can be taught or consulted on? At Just Jane, I teach that everyone has a unique superpower. Turn your 1-on-1 service into a digital course or a group coaching program.
2. Build Your Digital Home
You need a website and a brand that lives in the cloud. Your marketing needs to be Simple and Effective. If your lead generation requires you to be at a networking event in person, you are limited to a region.
3. The "Marketing Stress Test"
Automate your business. Use AI tools and scheduled content (like I teach in my workshops) so that your business keeps running while you’re crossing time zones.
Don’t Wait for Retirement
Digital nomadship isn't an "escape" from work; it’s a way to make work sustainable, inspiring, and free.
Your business plan is waiting to be written. The only question is: where will you be sitting when you write it?
